The movie is a sensation. There are many commentaries in the New York Times, YouTube, and everywhere else.
Terry found a summary narrative that helped people like me who knew just about nothing about the story.
The ENTIRE Story of The Odyssey Explained
Years ago when I was visiting Edina, Tommy Brown told me about Johnny Gibbons who inherited the Iliad and the Odyssey in original Greek from a family member who was an attorney. Johnny picked them up and learned to read Greek on his own. He said that best way to read both was in the original Greek.
I asked Mary Cheney for confirmation and detail.
I am grateful for her reply.
The relative that died was Mom’s Uncle Paul married to Aunt Jenny. Yes, he was an attorney.
I helped clean out their house after his death and still have a couple books from it.
Uncle Johnny took some of Uncle Paul’s Greek textbooks and did indeed learn to read Greek. I was told he learned it to be able to read earlier versions of the Bible.
Uncle Johnny was a brilliant man. He had a photographic memory. I was at a lunch one time Aunt Bella gave for a woman from Pakistan. They had become acquainted taking the same college class.
Johnny talked to her at length. She told us that he was the only American she had met that understood the India/Pakistan situation.
Mom and Aunt Bella asked him about it later. He said while talking to her he could “read” a book he had read years before giving that background.
