I got word from Joseph Zarantanello that 350,000 are about to get deported. Joe and I were teachers at St. Thomas High School in the early 1970s. He has been helping people in Haiti for many years. This is the message that I received:
350 Thousand Haitians who are living in the U.S. are about to lose their “Temporary Protected Status” due to a recent ruling by the Supreme Court. The Homeland Security folks say it’s safe for them to return to Haiti. Nothing could be farther from the truth!
I haven’t traveled to Haiti in six years because of the armed gangs that have been terrorizing, kidnapping, raping and murdering their own people (using American automatic weapons and ammunition, by the way!).
Not only is it not safe for Haitians to return, it would threaten our Economic Security to deport ånd destroy the Haitian community in America.
The Haitian community in the United States plays a vital role in the American workforce and economy. Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders alone contribute an estimated $5.9 billion to the U.S. economy annually, and contribute over $1.5 billion in federal, state, and local taxes.
Haitians are a vital force for good in the American Health Care System as well.
Senator Ed Markey has a bill in the Senate now that would extend TPS for Haitians for 3 years. Senate Bill 4814 has a good amount of support and the potential to pass. It will take you less than 15-minutes to contact your two Senators and urge them to support S.4814. Click this LINK to see the Bill and to contact your Senators.
