We have seen from history that projects like the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall do not move societies forward.
The best way to resolve the border issues is to start a world-wide Green New Deal whose goals include poverty abolition. The United States is the only country that does not punish the illegal immigrants’ employers. Start penalizing the employers.
Who would want to leave a good job at home to cross the deserts in northern Mexico or risk drowning in the Mediterranean to reach Europe?
The world-wide Green New Deal will be a deal that Democrats and Republicans can live with and find common ground on something.
The Green New Deal would be a major step in reversing global warming.
While billionaires thrive, many people are falling behind. Raising the minimum wage, vigorous anti-trust enforcement, making it easier to form unions, keeping the child tax credit and raising taxes on rich individuals and major corporations would help millions.
Many people do not vote because they feel that the people elected only help the rich and powerful. A deceased cousin voted one time in her life. She voted for Ross Perot. In the 2008 financial crisis, not a single Wall Street criminal went to jail. Instead they received bonuses and bailouts. I am surprised that DT voters never took a serious look at Bernie Sanders or AOC.
I ask our scholars, reporters and pundits to look at our society and recommend measures that will bring prosperity to all. Some years back, I started reading David Shipler’s book, The Working Poor. I got depressed by the time I got to page 25 and could get no further.
One family in 6 is food insecure. There is no excuse for this. In the US and many other countries, the supermarkets throw away about a third of the harvested food which has the wrong color, shape or some appearance defect that has nothing to do with nutrition. This is a rare problem that can be solved with much imagination and money only in tiny amounts.
The easiest way to do this would be through congressional action. The next best move would be at state level.
Ending food insecurity everywhere in the world would also be a goal for the Green New Deal.
I plan to start sending e-mails to my congressman Al Green and my two Republicans senators at noon CT on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. I will send an e-mail out for each subject spread out over two weeks. I welcome your recommendations.
We shall overcome,
Ed
