I will call Congressman Al Green´s environmental specialist, Jalaina Douglas, in the Washington D.C. office tomorrow to tout the Warheads to Windmills project. This is what I wrote to her tonight:
The Green New Deal can animate our entire society. Abolish poverty everywhere. Reverse global warming. Eliminate nuclear war. People can write songs and poetry to see this future.
I currently see no hope or vision in the body politic. When YouTube features President Trump latest arrest or legal difficulty, I am drawn to the drama as iron filings are drawn to a magnet. This is far more interesting than fires, floods, global warming and wars.
In both sides of the political divide, I see no hope, no vision and no animation. I see frustration everywhere.
I was born in Houston in 1944. The 1960s were an exciting time and a terrible time. LBJ brought the Great Society and the Vietnam War. There was the Second Vatican Council, the Civil Rights Movements, the feminists, Apollo 11, the gays and the environmentalists. The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. President Nixon authorized the Environmental Protection Agency. There was excitement and frustration. Nowadays, I see only frustration.
May President Biden, the Democrats and the Republicans establish the Green New Deal, face the climate crisis together, abolish poverty and lead the world to bright sunlit uplands.
Sincerely,
Ed O´Rourke
