Mary Rose Cheney Sent Me the Latest News from Knox County

Background:

I started subscribing to the Edina Sentinel’s electronic edition to prepare for our next trip.  The Tenaska company has been establishing long-term leases to set up wind farms in northeast Missouri.  Many residents are hostile to the idea due to the noise and other problems.

They have sold the farm.  I wanted to contact Dennis Bradley who had managed this farm and four others thinking that he could have contact information on the new owners.  I wanted to visit and take pictures. This is Mary’s message:

Dennis Bradley does not manage farm any more. He is 10 years younger than me but in poor health.  It was a relief to him not to have that responsibility.

Kathy & I would strongly advise you NOT to drive near farm or anywhere else in rural Knox County.  Ten years ago I would not have said that.  But wind farm people have caused great dissension in that area.  Some farmers have signed up to have giant wind turbines erected on their land; most have not.  Great disagreement among neighbors.  Many angry meetings.

At this point the wind farm employees are surveying land in the area.  Many have had threatening shots fired at them or held at gun point until the sheriff arrives.  Now they are trying to survey from helicopters.  I only hope some angry farmer doesn’t try to take pot shots at a helicopter.  All the farmers carry guns and have several more  in their truck.

Wind farm people are blamed every time something goes missing or when someone leaves a gate open and cattle escape.

Local farmers know every car on the road and who it belongs to.  They look upon a stranger or unknown vehicle with great suspicion.  People they don’t know well are just plain not welcome.  Sad but true.

Ed, if you want to visit a farm, my understanding is that Jane Carey’s brother now owns their family farm south of Chillicothe.  You might get in touch with her.

My observations:I invite you to see this wind farm documentary. A German company made it.

I have worked as an accountant on expanding refineries.  I have the idea that assembly wind farms is more hazardous.

Sincerely,

Ed
