This is my letter to Congressman Al Green whose district includes Houston and Missouri City.
One American in 6 is food insecure. It should be zero.
There are two main reasons for this. Matthew Desmond maintains that the federal government principally uses state governments to administer food programs. Since the states have wide discretion, they spend the money on something else or do not spend anything. Tennessee has $10,000 for every poor child in their state. I ask you to propose legislation that obligates the states to spend federal money on poor people´s food.
The second factor is in the US and many other countries, one-third the harvested food never reaches anyone´s kitchen or restaurant. The super markets throw it away because there is a blemish or an unacceptable shape or color. I propose that the federal government allows the food banks to buy this food and reimburse them. Other solutions are necessary. I invite you to see this 18 minute YouTube presentation showing what is occurring now.
Please get me in touch with a staff member, a government employee or someone in an NGO that you work with in poverty matters. Together we can end food insecurity in the US and then end food insecurity everywhere.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Edward T. O´Rourke, Jr., CPA
