Since I am a WWII buff, I want to pass along a few thoughts. The best book that I have seen was written by John and Ann Tusa.
Robert Jackson took a leave of absence from the Supreme Court to be the American chief prosecutor. His opening statement is a landmark in legal history. It is long. Read the first 6 pages and see if you want more.

On 21 November 1945, in his opening address, the American Robert H. Jackson, Public Prosecutor at the Nuremberg trial, recalls the historic importance of the trial of Nazi war criminals and lists the charges in detail.
Hermann Goering was candid when he was not directly implicated.
Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

Winston Churchill, George Kennan, a career diplomat and many others had the idea to make a list of the worst criminals and carry out summary executions. President Truman thought otherwise. He and Stalin wanted a trial. Possibly Stalin was thinking about a show trial.
Some people said this was ex post facto law. William L Shirer in End of a Berlin Diary exploded. There people are hair-splitting legalists. Murder has been against the law since Cain and Abel.
