The Civil War was unnecessary. Americans would have been better off separating in 1820 or a later date. The South was a backwater region. There was little upward social mobility even for white people. In all the states that joined the Confederacy, none had a single public school before the war.
Economist John Kenneth Galbraith felt that the Southerners would have had to start paying the slaves to stay home by the 1880s when factories in the North needed workers.
