Our churches, schools, political parties, the business community and pundits have failed. They all protect the ONE PERCENT by ignoring them. DT voters are desperate people who think that immigrants, black people, brown people, homosexuals and leftists are picking their pockets. The mainstream media does not inform anybody that three Americans have as much wealth as 160 million.
Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut talks about the working poor in his long New York Times commentary.
Around 2007, I bought David Shipler’s book but got too depressed to go past page 25.
For those concerned about Americans who are living from paycheck to paycheck and do not have $400 for an emergency, I recommend reading The Working Poor. Hopefully you can read past page 25.
One American family in 6 is food insecure. Since supermarkets throw away about one-third the food that they receive, I am asking for someone in a charity or a government agency to initiate a plan to pick up the discarded food and take it to a food bank. Some imagination is necessary here.
Raising the minimum wage, universal health care and funding non-university education would help. Making rich individuals and major corporations pay taxes like they did when Ike was president would provide funds for all that I am talking about.
I ask everybody to demand the Sun, the Moon, the stars and half the planet during the presidential campaign. Forget about moving to the center. Huge majorities want to reverse climate change, universal health care, Social Security and everything else.
Bernie Sanders told everybody that business as usual is radical. Keeping people poor is radical. In other industrialized nations, people have universal health care and social services. Student debt and bankruptcy for medical bills is virtually unknown in other societies. Maintaining the highest wealth discrepancy in world history is radical.
During the Second World War, people in Allied nations wanted more than Allied victory. They wanted a better, more humane world. The United Nations, the World Bank, the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs, the Bretton Woods Agreement, the Marshall Plan and other agreements show that humans are achieving something good.
I ask people to have their dreams and express them. Make this election more than beating DT, Project 2025 and Wall Street. End poverty everywhere with a Second Marshall Plan. Reverse global warming. Provide health care for everybody. The bloated Pentagon budget is equal to the next 10 countries in line. I would feel safe when it equal to the next three. A presidential campaign is a good place to get attention to reach our humanitarian dreams.
We can get to there from here,
Ed
