On June 6, 1944, Mother was waiting for her ride to the defense plant when the extras were on the streets. The Allied landed in Normandy. Everyone knew that the war had made a big turn. The Allies started the final offensive that would end the war in Europe. This was D-Day.
On June 6, 1991, nothing was going on in Houston or the world that was not going on the day before. In only retrospect, I saw that this was a day that would change my life forever. This became my sobriety date.
I had been attending AA meetings starting in April, 1989. In spring 1991, I started getting serious. I remembered special times in my life before I had consumed alcohol, at Texas Catholic Boys Camp and Knox County, Missouri. The rural experience and religious thoughts joined with spectacular scenery.
Texas highway 27 from Ingram to the roadside park that overlooks Camp Tecaboca is especially pretty. See some scenes here:
Under the Influence was especially helpful. I recommend it to the alcoholic, family and friends.
The biggest surprise was in the third week in football season in 1991. I was hupping and hollering watching the Dallas Cowboys without a drink in my hand.
A favorite song by Three Dog Night makes me remember Texas Catholic Boys Camp and Knox County.
