I learned some things in this article.
New Orleans was American’s third largest city in 1860.
Eli Whitney did not profit from his cotton gin. The manufacturers used his design and did not pay a dime.
Even though I taught American history at the high school level, it was only in the 1990s that I learned that cotton in the 19th century was what petroleum was in the 20th century.
